The 53rd District represents Falls Church City, as well as parts of Fairfax County. Specifically, the area covers Pimmit Hills, Merrifield, and parts of Strathmeade Springs. The area is generally south of Interstate 66, except for the areas between 495 and the Dulles Toll Road south of Magarity Road.

The district also covers areas north of Arlington Boulevard, between the Seven Corners area and Nutley St. Other areas include Strathmeade Springs, Mosby, and other areas north of Gallows Road.

Virginia’s 53rd House of delegates district was previously represented by Jim Scott, a Democrat elected in 1991. Jim Scott is not currently seeking re-election for this seat. This means that for the first time in 22 years, this is an open seat election.
